Holistic Renovation of Modernist Architecture: UREHERIT Presents Discussion on the Future of
the Salute Hotel
As part of the UREHERIT project and the exhibition Holistic Renovation of Modernism Housing, a public
event dedicated to the preservation and renewal of Kyiv’s iconic Salute Hotel took place on 30
October. The meeting focused on contemporary approaches to renovating modernist housing and
public buildings, highlighting both technical challenges and cultural significance.
The event opened with welcome remarks from Oleksandr Chyzhevskyi, President of the National
Union of Architects of Ukraine (NSAU), and Rūta Leitanaitė, UREHERIT coordinator. Rūta presented
the core ideas of the UREHERIT initiative and the international exhibition on holistic renovation
practices.
One of the hotel’s original authors, Volodymyr Shevchenko, reviewed the architectural and
engineering features of the building, outlining the key aspects that require improvement during
future reconstruction.
Further contributions were made by Gennady Farenyuk, Director of NDIBK and academician, and
Yehor Farenyuk, Head of the Energy Efficiency Fund, who discussed modern standards for energy
performance, accessibility, engineering solutions, and the potential of modernist buildings in
contemporary commercial use.
The case of the Salute Hotel—currently facing auction and lacking official heritage protection—was
presented as a critical example of the need for informed, responsible renovation practices. The
speakers emphasized that modernist architecture holds significant cultural and social value, and its
preservation depends on collaborative, expert-driven decision-making.
